THE IMPACT OF THIS ROLE

  • Set and develop strategies for the Engineering division aligned with organizational vision and future aspirations. Take a long-term and big-picture view of the business. Communicate compelling visions and translates that into plans and actions.
  • Under the direction of the Resort Manager, and within the limits of the resorts policies and procedures provide advice to senior management on all aspects of engineering support, environmental best practices and controls and the operational efficiency of the property.
  • Responsible for the efficient and safe operation of all plant, equipment, ancillary maintenance and repairs towards protection of the property asset including structural aspects of the building. Maintain the condition of the physical assets of the resort by carrying out any upgrading and project work in liaison with designated internal department and / or external consultants as agreed.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Financial

  • Demonstrate sound business acumen by keeping up to date with market trends and industry dynamics. Identify business opportunities for the organization. Demonstrate financial awareness by thinking in terms of profits, loss and added value. Deliver tangible business results.
  • Assist with capital project planning, in liaison with senior management, to ensure capital funding is effectively allocated and budgeted in accordance with company directives and philosophy.
  • Ensure the cost effectiveness and technical efficiency of all services performed by outside contracts by close supervision. Ensure work is carried out in accordance with contracts, leases, services agreements and warranties.
  • Reviews energy conservation initiatives to ensure minimum energy and utility consumption without sacrificing human comfort.

Operations

  • Take initiative and ownership of making decisions and actions timely and independently. Take calculated risks and makes considered decisions based on information and intelligence across the organization.
  • Plan, implement and administer an energy management program by establishing energy management ‘best practices’ to achieve reductions in consumption, without negative impact to customers or associates, and maintains records and sets future performance targets against with the objective to reduce usage and enhance profitability.
  • Ensure associate’s awareness of energy management within the property by conducting regular education and training programs on energy conservation and matters related to efficient operation of equipment in a cost-effective fashion.
  • Contribute to guest satisfaction standards by ensuring that technical support services quickly address, and where possible, anticipate, individual needs.  Ensure the safety and comfort of guests and that any requests for service are handled in a courteous and efficient fashion.
  • Ensure adherence to all statutory regulations and fire codes by regularly reviewing policies and safety procedures.  Ensure that any tests and inspections required on plant by statutory authorities are carried out as and when required and that all records and documentation associated with such tests and surveys are correctly kept and/or displayed.  Ensure that the resort fulfils all compliance requirements.
  • Develop, manage and maintain preventive maintenance programmes for:
    • All mechanical and electrical systems.
    • All guest rooms and public areas (in conjunction with the housekeeping team).
    • All kitchens and restaurants (in conjunction with Director of Food, Beverage and Executive Chef/ Director of Culinary Operations).
  • Contribute to the effectiveness of management decision making by representing the engineering department at all management and associate meetings and by ensuring regular liaison with heads of other departments.
  • Ensure individual property readiness for Operational Review Management (OMR) and take responsibility for all follow up and corrective action as maybe needed to ensure compliance with company guidance.
  • Develop and update policies and manuals, as related to the department, for implementation in the field, while ensuring compliance to the same for consistency across the group.

  • Through people leadership, provide others with a clear direction and set appropriate standards of behavior. Motivate and empower others by delegating work appropriately. Provide associates with development opportunities and support. Build capable and diverse teams.
  • Ensure technically competent engineering associates by selecting, training and developing a motivated, well-qualified engineering team. 
  • Ensure the quality of all work completed by both associates and external contracted associates adheres to the standards of good engineering practice, and that all safety rules are consistently applied.
  • Foster the development of a positive work environment for all associates. Mentor all levels of associates through formal and informal meetings, discussions and performance feedback.
  • Establish and maintain effective internal communication and meeting structures to ensure optimum teamwork and productivity.
  • Proactively drive high levels of associate engagement by ensuring regular conversations and communication through department meetings, one to ones, performance appraisals and all associate meetings.
  • Foster a culture of recognition by promoting resort recognition programmes and divisional incentives.
  • Maintain discipline within the Resort and conduct disciplinary and grievance interviews with all relevant associates and as and when required with the Talent & Culture Department.
  • Operate an efficient and well-organized division, ensuring all associates are well trained and highly motivated.
  • Take an active role in ensuring compliance with training requirements in conjunction with Talent & Culture.
  • Actively participate in recruitment and succession planning, ensuring the right people are in the right roles, to meet both current and future needs.
  • Model the company culture, vision, mission and core values always, actively driving the vision and values across the resort.

CRITICAL SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS

  • Demonstrable experience of leading an engineering function with a proven track record in strategic engineering leadership delivering effective strategies, policies, processes and systems.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent Engineering related qualification.
  • Experience at a senior management level within Engineering.
  • Analytical mindset and data-based decision maker.
  • Proven strategic project management and delegation skills.
  • Experience managing complex budgets including capital expenditure.
